A ORGANIZAÇÃO DE PEQUENOS PRODUTORES DE LEITE DO NOROESTE DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL: APORTES NA LENTE DA NOVA ECONOMIA INSTITUCIONAL (NEI) E DA GESTÃO DE CADEIAS DE SUPRIMENTOS (GCS). AgEcon
Arbage, Alessandro Porporatti; Peroni, Neimar Damian; Costa, Pedro Urubatan Neto Da.

Consumer driven supply chains: the case of Dutch organic tomato CIGR Journal
Anastasiadis, Foivos; van Dam, Ynte.
Supply chain management refers to the efficient integration of various processes involved in turning resources into consumer products.  Effectiveness of the supply chain is more easily understood in terms of Value Chain Management, and the integration of processes that turn resources into consumer value.  The current paper reports two studies into the value chain of organic produce in The Netherlands.  The paper combines two different research approaches to study which consumer motives and values are the main drivers of organic consumption.  In a qualitative laddering (N=72) study, three distinct groups of motives were identified.  These motives are centred around hedonic, benevolent, and universalist values.  In a quantitative survey (N=1453), the...

Designing Food Supply Chains: An Application of Lean Manufacturing and Lean Supply Chain Paradigms to the Spanish Egg Industry AgEcon
Fuentes-Pila, Joaquin; Rodriguez Monroy, Carlos; Antelo, Ramon; Torrubiano, Juan; Roldan, Larisa.
Since Womack et al. (1990) published “The Machine that Changed the World”, showing the results of an international assembly plant benchmarking study carried out by the MIT International Motor Vehicle Program, the Lean Production paradigm, initially based on the Toyota Production System, has been applied successfully by an increasing number of leading companies within the automotive industry. Currently, Lean Production methodologies and tools have already shown their potential, both in manufacturing and service sectors, to improve dramatically productivity, speed, responsiveness, delivered value, and profits. Lean Manufacturing has also been applied by large companies in the agri-food sector, but there is little information on these applications available...

EFFICIENT CONSUMER RESPONSE IN DER WERTSCHÖPFUNGSKETTE MILCH AgEcon
Obersojer, Thomas; Weindlmaier, Hannes.
The German food market has undergone tremendous changes within the last years: in food retailing a concentration process has taken place, discount-stores have gained market shares, and consumers have shown a hybrid and smart buying behaviour demanding highest quality at the lowest price. New information technologies have been developed and enable a closer collaboration between the members of the chain. Therefore, the former isolated management of single firms must be replaced by a vertical comprehensive management encompassing each individual member of the supply chain. In this context, Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) is seen to be the successful supply chain strategy for the grocery industry. This paper gives an overview of the ECR concept and its single...

GESTÃO DE DISTRIBUIÇÃO DAS EMPRESAS ATACADISTAS DE FLV NA REGIÃO METROPOLITANA DE RECIFE - PE: O CASO DE DUAS EMPRESAS AgEcon
Mendes, Luciene Nascimento; Silva, Jearbes Alexandre da; Favero, Luiz Andrea.
The national market for FLV (fruits, legumes and vegetables) has grown significantly in recent years. However, due to the high perishability of these products, their quality is subject to appropriate processes of standardization, selection, classification, packaging and transportation to avoid losses, which are high. This requires a complete harmony between the players/agents in this market to offer the consumer high quality products with speed and efficiency. Since the producers rarely perform these procedures, it is up to the segments, such as the wholesale segment, represented by CEASAs and wholesaler companies. Thus, this study sought to analyze the systems of two marketing wholesaler companies of fruits, legumes and vegetables in the metropolitan area...

Inter-firm Relationships and Performance Factors in the Australian Beef Supply Chain: Implications for the Stakeholders AgEcon
Nasir Uddin, Mohammad; Quaddus, Mohammed; Islam, Nazrul.
Recent study by Meat & Livestock Australia revealed that cost competitiveness and market development issues in supply chain are the major factors for a long term decline of the Australian Beef industry. This study, based on the explanation of transaction cost theory argues that competitive performance of an industry depends on improving cost efficiency across the whole of supply chain, the underlying value chain, and the relationship among the stakeholders in the industry. With a main objective to investigate the underlying factors of developing competent inter-firm relationship that influence the supply chain performance and competitiveness, this study presents details of a survey carried out and tests the hypothesis that inter-organizational...

LOGISTICAL STRATEGIES AND RISKS IN CANADIAN GRAIN MARKETING AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L.; Carlson, Donald C.E..
Supply chain management in grain marketing has become very important with the maturity of the industry. This is particularly important in the Canadian grain marketing system which has experienced disruptions for various reasons over many years. These problems have been the topic of numerous industry evaluations, have resulted in a complaint about service obligations and recently have been addressed by the Estey Commission. A detailed model of the supply chain in the Canadian grain logistics system was developed in this paper to evaluate factors that cause disruptions, as well as the effect of several important logistics and marketing strategies on system performance. The results indicated that in a normal year there is sufficient randomness throughout...

Power and Supply Chain Management - Insights from Russia AgEcon
Belaya, Vera; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
The research topic of power relationships has been receiving increasingly more attention lately. However, only a few scientific works have studied power in the context of supply chain management. In this regard, intriguing research questions arise of how to distinguish among and deal with negative and positive effects of power in order to avoid problems and use power as an effective tool for supply chain management appear to be an important one. An important challenge, therefore, is to find out what role power plays in supply chain networks and how it affects supply chain management with specific attention to coordination and cooperation, and whether power can be utilized as a tool to promote the overall supply chain effectiveness. Therefore, the aim of...

SISTEMAS DE COMERCIALIZAÇÃO DAS EMPRESAS ATACADISTAS DE FLV NA REGIÃO METROPOLITANA DE RECIFE DO ESTADO DE PERNAMBUCO: CASO DAS EMPRESAS A E B. AgEcon
Mendes, Luciene Nascimento; Silva, Jearbes Alexandre da; Favero, Luiz Andrea.

THE “DARK” AND THE “BRIGHT” SIDES OF POWER IN SUPPLY CHAIN NETWORKS AgEcon
Belaya, Vera; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
One of the prerequisites for a supply chain network is the existence of a focal company, which possesses power to coordinate the network in order to realize its strategic objectives. Power represents one of the major elements of the supply chain management and seems to have been treated in the literature in contrasting ways from the two sides “dark” and “bright”. Using literature review we examine how these sides of power affect supply chain management from the viewpoint of the focal company with specific attention to coordination and cooperation issues and whether it can be used as a tool to promote the overall supply chain effectiveness.

Towards a Diagnostic Instrument to Identify Improvement Opportunities for Quality Controlled Logistics in Agrifood Supply Chain Networks AgEcon
van der Vorst, Jack G.A.J.; van Kooten, Olaf; Pieternel, A. Luning.
Western-European consumers have become not only more demanding on product availability in retail outlets but also on other food attributes such as quality, integrity, and safety. When (re)designing food supply-chain networks, from a logistics point of view, one has to consider these demands next to traditional efficiency and responsiveness requirements. The concept ‘quality controlled logistics’ (QCL) hypothesizes that if product quality in each step of the supply chain can be predicted in advance, goods flows can be controlled in a pro-active manner and better chain designs can be established resulting in higher product availability, constant quality, and less product losses. The paper discusses opportunities of using real-time product quality information...
